CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Sheikh Ali Belhadj Released released!

IHRC has great pleasure in informing campaigners that by the grace of Allah, IHRC Prisoner of Faith Sheikh Ali Belhadj has been released from his detention in Algeria. The Deputy Chief of the Islamic Salvation Front was arrested in July 2005 for praising Iraq\'s insurgency despite being barred from making public statements. He was released as part of a general amnesty offered by the Algerian government to almost 3000 Islamist prisoners and under which the Algerian military is cleared of any wrongdoings. Belhadj previously served a 12 year sentence in a military prison for “threatening state security”. Sadly, Belhadj's mother died while he was incarcerated.

IHRC congratulates all campaigners for their immense efforts in calling for the release of Sheikh Ali Belhadj.

“And what reason have you that you should not fight in the way of Allah and of the weak among the men and the women and the children, (of) those who say: Our Lord! Cause us to go forth from this town, whose people are oppressors, and give us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper.”
