ALERT UPDATE: Sudan: Hassan al-Turabi hospitalised after renewing Hunger Strike

Jailed Sudanese Islamist leader Hassan al-Turabi has been admitted to hospital a week after renewing a hunger strike against his detention. Turabi was rushed to Khartoum hospital on the 25th July. He and dozens of other political prisoners ended their previous hunger strike on the 15th July but resumed it three days later after authorities failed to keep their promises to either try or release them.

Last week, 7 more members of the Popular Congress Party were released. This follows the release of 13 others in early July. Of the 78 members initially detained by the Sudanese government, 58 remain in prison. Officials said the releases were part of a periodic \\\"revision\\\" of individual cases, though Islamist sources said it was because of their deteriorating health as a result of the original hunger strike, begun on June 30.

Turabi and his party members were imprisoned last March on suspicion of conspiring to overthrow the regime and fuelling the war in the province of Darfur west of Sudan. No official charges have been filed.

Suggested action

IHRC calls on all campaigners to maintain pressure on the Sudanese government to release Hassan al-Turabi and the remaining political prisoners. Detainees are being kept in rat-infested cells and are being tortured. Turabi has been increasingly critical of the scorched earth policy adopted by the government in Darfur, where the United Nations says up to 50,000 have been killed and more than a million left homeless by clashes between the rebels and state-sponsored Arab militias.

Please write to the following people to demand the release of Hassan al-Turabi and other members of the PCP. Please also demand the Sudanese government cease its campaign of ethnic cleansing of the indigenous tribes in Darfur.
