ALERT UPDATE: Sudan - Detention without charge, Dr Elamin Mohammed Osman

IHRC is extremely concerned by the continuing detention of Dr Elamin without charge and legal representation, particularly in light of his deteriorating medical conditions.

Dr Elamin was allowed a medical check in detention which led to him being diagnosed as suffering from retinal detachment in the right eye. He is in need of an urgent operation to save his eyesight. It is not possible to carry out this operation in Sudan where they are lacking in appropriate medical facilities. Dr Elamin therefore needs to travel abroad.

Security forces and government officials are not willing to release him from detention unless he resigns from Munazamat Al Dawa or the Board of Trustees relieve him of his duties. On Tuesday, the Secretary General of the ruling party summoned members of the Secretariat General of Munazamat Al Dawa and requested that hold an early convention for the Board of Trustees to fire Dr Elamin. The Sudan authorities say that they then will be in a position to release him and allow him to travel for the urgent medical operation.

IHRC is further concerned by three more arrests by the Sudanese authorities related to Munazamat Al Dawa.

The following three were arrested on 10 July following a meeting of the General Secretariat of the organisation in Khartoum:

1. Dr Osman Abdul Wahab, in his late seventies, suffers from heart problems.
2. Abdullah Deng Niyal.
3. Abdul Moneim Abu Bakr, Dean of the Mubarak Gismallah Institute of
Training & Research (one of Munazama\'s bodies), suffers from hypertension.

All three are members of the Secretariat General of Munazama. The possible reason for their arrest was their refusal of government pressure on the organisation to change the convention date of its Trustees Board so that they may fire the detained Secretary General Dr Elamin.

A total of 12 persons connected to Munazama have been arrested and detained without charge.

Requested Action

IHRC requests campaigners to contact the appropriate Sudanese ministries (addresses and contacts below), and the Sudanese embassy in your country (some addresses below).

Please politely call for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Osman and all other members of the Secretariat General of Munazama. Please raise your of concerns regarding their detention given the facts of their medical conditions.
