1. Background

Hicham Yezza, a former PhD student and current member of staff at the University of Nottingham faces deportation to Algeria on 1 June 2008, Sunday. He was arrested unjustly along with another student Rizwaan Sabir under the Terrorism Act 2000 on 14 May 2008 after they were found to be in possession of an Al Qaeda manual, downloaded by Sabir as part of his Ph D research and emailed to Yezza for printing because Sabir could not afford to print it himself. Both were released without charge six days later.

Yezza was however rearrested and charged under immigration legislation.

Many students, lecturers and supporters have mobilized a campaign in response to Yezza’s arrest and impending deportation and to protest against restricting academic freedom.

“And what reason have you that you should not fight in the way of Allah and of the weak among the men and the women and the children, (of) those who say: Our Lord! Cause us to go forth from this town, whose people are oppressors, and give us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper.”
