URGENT ALERT: GUILTY VERDICT: DEATH PENALTY SOUGHT BY PROSECUTION FOR IMAM JAMIL

On Saturday 9 March 2002, the Fulton County jury took 10 hours to reach the verdict finding Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin guilty of killing Deputy Ricky Kinchen and wounding his partner Deputy Aldranon English almost two years ago. The jury found Imam Jamil guilty on all 13 counts related to the two shootings, reaching their verdict according to many observers relatively quickly.

On the same evening around Isha time Imam Jamil made the following statement regarding the verdict:

“It is still five a day. This decision should pierce the conscience of many

people and let them see the intensity of the struggle. We should raise

our level of struggle. Now things are on another level. We should

increase and maintain our ibadah. I express my heartfelt salaams and

appreciation to all the people who have supported me, stood by me

and have been steadfast in their support of me.”

The penalty phase of the trial began on Monday and is expected to last most of this week. The jurors are to decide by the end of this week whether Imam Jamil should be sentenced to death by lethal injection, life without the possibility of parole or life with the possibility of parole. A prosecutor has stated that according to evidence already heard during the three weeks of the trial, the recommendation for the death sentence has been justified.

The defence will appeal any decision reached by the jury.

IHRC are supporting the campaign to free Imam Jamil and are working in co-ordination with his campaign team in America. Campaign material including specimen letters will be sent out once the appeal has begun.

In the meantime please continue to send letters of support to Imam Jamil at:
