1.       Intro

The death of Arafat Jaradat in Israeli custody highlights once more the brutality that Palestinians must endure.  Without full liberation and the end of Israeli apartheid, such deaths, torture, killings and abuse of all sorts will continue.  This week IHRC brings Arafat's case to the fore with two vigils - to protest G4S's complicity in prison abuses and the BBC's failure to report on Palestine in a fair and contextualised manner.  There are suggested actions below.

Also in this week's digest of our website, you will find details of recent events, as well as two summer schools, and an action alert on the current situation in Bangladesh.

If you would like to donate to IHRC please contact the office on +44 20 8904 4222 or info@ihrc.org or download a copy of our latest newsletter and fill in one of the donation forms and return to us:

Action Alert: Palestine/Israel - Protest against G4S complicity in the torture of Palestinian children

HRC are urging campaigners and activists to demand the BBC follow its remit to “inform”, “educate” and provide “trusted World and UK news…” by covering the plight of Palestinian hunger strikers such as Samer Al-Issawi in G4S-provisioned Israeli prisons and interrogation centres.

Action Alert: Bangladesh - Demand a fair trial for Professor Ghulam Azam

Bangladeshi pro-democracy campaigner and former chief of Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami party, Professor Ghulam Azam, was indicted on 13 May 2012 by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal for alleged war crimes during the 1971 war with West Pakistan.
The court has been condemned for colluding with the government, and being incapable of conducting a fair and impartial trial. His trial is seen by many as an attempt to delegitimise political opposition to the ruling Awami League party, in order to ensure the latter’s victory at the next election.

Write to your local MPs and the UN demanding that they act to ensure that Professor Ghulam Azam is tried in an independent international court.

In commemoration of World Chechnya Day last week, we’d like to highlight  a particular book, ‘Chechnya, The Case For independence’ which is being sold at our bookshop. In this powerful argument for Chechen self-determination, Tony Wood considers Russo-Chechen relations over the past century and a half, as well as the fate of the region since the fall of the Soviet Union. "The Case for Chechnya" sharply criticizes the role of Western nations in their struggle, and lays bare the weakness - and shamefulness - of the arguments used to deny the Chechens' right to sovereignty.

Another book worth reading is ‘Europe's Shame: Anti-Muslim Hatred and the Roma of Bulgaria’. This IHRC report looks at the situation of Roma communities in Bulgaria, and the discrimination they face.
