Joint Statement on Syria by Islamic Human Rights Commission and Citizens International

IHRC concerned about the on going violence in Syria and when justice will be restored.

IHRC and CI are and have been deeply concerned about the never-ending spiral of violence and killing in Syria.  People have been killed and continue to die in their tens of thousands, at least 2.5 million are internally displaced, hundreds of thousands are refugees, and the most horrendous acts of sexual violence, desecration and abuse have become commonplace with sectarian narratives driving a zero sum attitude on all sides.

Lynne’s Message for November

I have fears for Tom Turkey, this year.

Tom is the live Thanksgiving* Turkey donated to the White House for the dinner.  And every year since he has taken office,  Obama has pardoned him.  I am afraid for the poor bird this year since this same President does not seem to have it in his heart or intellect to understand the true nature of Mercy to be shown to birds, not to mention human beings.

New Title:
The Awami League (AL) of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina won a landslide victory in the 2008 national elections.  In it smanifesto the party pledged to maintain an independent judiciary and strengthen the protection of human rights.  In gross violation of its electoral pledge, it captured and turned the judiciaryinto a tool to advance its political interests and launched a witchhunt against political oppoents.
Overviewing key cases of the War Crimes Tribunal currenlty trying political opponents, to the abuse of law, the various political interventions in the process and more, Citizens International's book is an indispensable tool for activists and those wanting to become more familiar with this little known travesty of justice.
As many people face the death penalty after what many human rights groups say are sham trials, it is imperative that this abuse of process and these sham trials are exposed.
IHRC Publications:
This book exposes the pervasive nature of Islamophobic discrimination in France. Survey results show that over 80% of Muslims in France have had such negative experiences, including hearing offensive jokes being made about Islam or Muslims; hearing Islamophobic comments being made by politicians; and witnessing the implementation of policies, both political and organisational, that impact Muslims negatively. The highest figure, over 87%, reported seeing negative stereotypes of Muslims in the media. Solutions to such deep-seated problems in Muslim/non-Muslim interaction in France can only be found through a study of history, both medieval and modern. This work is part of a project assessing Muslim experiences of hostility and discrimination in different countries.
Hijab, Meaning, Identity, Otherization and Politics: British Muslim Women £3

Available to download as a PDF and read on any of your mobile reading devices and platforms, this groundbreaking work remains relevant as controversies rage about headcoverings and Muslim women.
It aims to record the main areas of concern in regards to Hijab. The wearing of Hijab has always been controversial, especially in a post 9/11 climate which has seen Hijab bans in both France and Turkey and the case of a British student, who was excluded from school for wearing a jilbab (full length overcoat).
This report particularly aims to voice the views of both men and women who recognize or affiliate to the concept of Hijab and to present recommendations to the government by analysing responses from a nationwide survey of 1200 Muslims, qualitative answers of 56 Muslims and 365 quantitative questionnaires from IHRC's 2003-2004 survey entitled the 'Hijab-Project'.
The British Media And Muslim Representation: The Ideology of Demonisation £3

The sixth report in the British Muslims' Expectations of Government series explores the relationship between perceptions by and of Muslims and the role of domination and demonisation in the cultural language of the media.
Questions asked in this study are: How has the Western media generally covered Islam and Muslims? What are the concerns about media reporting and why does representation matter? What action do Muslims expect the government to take to remedy any unfairness?
By analysing responses from a nationwide survey of 1125 Muslims, and answers from 57 qualitative questionnaires and analyses of television news, films and English literature this report seeks to answer some of these questions and to understand how media can influence public understanding and viewpoints.
