IHRC ON THE ZARIA MASSACRES

EVENT REPORT: SIDE PANEL MEETING AT THE UNITED NATIONS ON NIGERIA: On 19 September 2014, a side panel meeting entitled “Nigeria: The Zaria Massacres and the Role of the Military” was organized by IHRC in Geneva at the United Nations during the 27th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Two eyewitnesses, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and Dr. Musa Shuaibu were present on the panel discussion through Skype

ZARIA’S MILITARY INVOLVEMENT IN THE MASSACRES (via. Spy Ghana)

On 25 July 2014 Nigerian soldiers attacked the annual al-Quds Day procession in support of Palestine in Zaria, a city in Kaduna State in northern Nigeria. The following day, soldiers drove to the Husainiyyah Baqiyyatullah and opened fire on supporters of the Islamic Movement within the precinct of the main building.

IHRC strongly condemns the witchhunt that is targeting an executive member of the National Union of Students after she helped defeat a motion that was seen to be supportive of western intervention in Iraq and Syria.

A new report published by IHRC into the growing use of denaturalisation as a political weapon against dissidents calls for the practice to be banned under international law.

DEPORTATION ‘POSSIBLE DEATH SENTENCE’ FOR PAKISTANI RIGHTS CAMPAIGNER 

Liaquat Ali Hazara was set to be deported on Tuesday 21 October to Pakistan after the British government rejected his pleas for asylum. Despite persistent death threats from Taliban militants to his person and his family in Pakistan, the UK government determined it was safe for him to return to the violence-wrought country.

NEW POWERS GIVE CHARITY WATCHDOG GREEN LIGHT TO TARGET MUSLIM GROUPS 

The government is seeking to furnish the Charity Commission, the regulatory body for British charities, with powers to prevent people with convictions for certain criminal offences such as terrorism or money laundering from being charity trustees and to disqualify people from being a charity trustee if the Charity Commission considers them unfit.

COUPLE DEPORTED DESPITE COURT INJUNCTION 

IHRC strongly condemns the British government’s deportation of a Pakistani couple who have been subjected to death threats despite a court injunction preventing their removal.

BRITISH GOVERNMENT AND UN URGED TO CHALLENGE SAUDI DEATH SENTENCE 

Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr is a leading Shia scholar who was arrested for his outspoken criticism of the Saudi monarchy and his calls for equality and reform on trumped up charges of apostasy and terrorism. He has been severely tortured in detention.
