10 October 2011marks Columbus Day in the USA and celebrations of the arrival of Columbus to the Americas in 1492. Since 1971, it has been a public holiday, which is celebrated on the second Monday in October.  However the day has been reclaimed by indigenous peoples and renamed ‘Indigenous Resistance Day’ which has formal recognition in places like South Dakota and Berkeley, California.
