Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has published a report online detailing the findings of a visit made by a Universal Justice Network (UJN) delegation to Egypt in the midst of the country’s uprisings in the spring.

The delegation included IHRC Chair and representative of UJN London secretariat Massoud Shadjareh; representative of UJN Malaysian secretariat Mohideen Abdulkader; UJN member and elected Imam of the Islamic Center of Washington Mohamed al-Asi; and IHRC campaigns officer Salma Ashraf.

The delegates engaged in dialogue with a broad spectrum of political, civil-society and human rights activists in the country. The report offers an insight into what was motivating the protestors and demonstrators, and their visions of what a free Egypt might look like.

The visit attempted to counter the tendency of many to call for the marginalization of groups with Islamic inspired ideologies, in order to promote a narrative of the uprisings based upon an entirely secular and nationalistic interpretation of the events. It stresses the urgent need of the international community to support the endeavors of Egyptian civil-society to preserve its Islamic identity.

“And what reason have you that you should not fight in the way of Allah and of the weak among the men and the women and the children, (of) those who say: Our Lord! Cause us to go forth from this town, whose people are oppressors, and give us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper.”
