Background

In 2015 a Saudi-led alliance invaded Yemen in one of the most devastating conflicts to take place so far. This alliance included Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Sudan, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, US mercenary force Academi, with support from the United States, UK, Germany and al-Qaeda. Their aim has been to put the former overthrown government of Yemen back in power. The war had caused the deaths of at least 377,000 people, making it one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the World. According to UN estimates, more than 24 million people, around 80% of the population, require critical humanitarian assistance. This includes more than 12 million children who are malnourished. The global Covid-19 pandemic that has wreaked havoc in some of the most industrialised and wealthiest nations has also ravaged an already shattered country. Yemen saw four times more deaths from the disease than the global average.

Although there is currently a ceasefire and peace talks going on between Ansarullah and Saudi Arabia, including the agreed release of 887 prisoners, there is a feeling that this war will take off again. It is unlikely that either side will be happy with anything other than one unified Yemen under their government, and a fear that Saudi Arabia’s coalition could return to their massacre of Yemenis, therefore it is important that they no longer receive any weapons, at least until a permanent solution is found.

Dear Foreign Secretary,

The ongoing war between Ansarullah and Saudi Arabia has devastated Yemen. Since 2015 over 377,000 people have been killed, including many civilians, and the violence has destroyed the economy and vital infrastructure. The global Covid-19 pandemic that has wreaked havoc in some of the most industrialised and wealthiest nations has also ravaging an already shattered country. Yemen sees four times more deaths from the disease than the global average.

Although there is a current ceasefire and peace talks taking place, it is yet to be seen whether they shall hold, and it is very likely that Saudi Arabia shall continue it’s relentless bombing campaign against the Yemeni population, which could cause the deaths of millions, both directly and from starvation.

Therefore, I strongly urge the British Government to immediately cease its support and arms sales to Saudi Arabia to stop this conflict. Further, I urge you to take the necessary humanitarian measures to ease the sufferings of the people of Yemen.

Yours sincerely,
