PRESS RELEASE: Srebrenica 10 Years On
Europe’s shame needs to be acknowledged

The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) extends its condolences today to the mothers of Srebrenica, as some finally bury their loved ones today. Thousands more may never recover the bodies of the estimated 8,000 men and boys exterminated by Serb soldiers ten years ago, in the biggest post-war massacre in Europe.

Reflecting on this sombre anniversary, IHRC Chair Massoud Shadjareh said:

“Srebrenica stands as a symbol of the most evil that man is capable of, but perhaps worse still it indicts the very governments that vowed ‘never again’ in the wake of the Holocaust. As the world sends condolences to London after the attacks that have killed 50 of its citizens, it should also face up to its failure in Srebrenica to protect innocent lives. We should remember that it was the UN’s failures to protect those it had promised to that led to these crimes against humanity and genocide. Given the recent atrocities in the UK, today would be an opportune time for those key players and governments to mourn Srebrenica’s fallen innocents if we are to truly to unite in pursuit of justice for the victims of unjustified violence.”
