Press Release: EU Human Rights Report on UK Condemns Politics of Fear

IHRC welcomes today’s country report on the UK by the European Commissioner on Human Rights, Mr Alvaro Gil-Robles. The Report, based on Mr Gil-Robles’ visit to the UK in November 2004, exposes the policies of fear of the British government.

Among other things, the Report emphasises the absolute prohibition on evidence extracted through torture, condemns the imposition of control orders as contrary to the European Convention of Human Rights and called for the introduction of single equality legislation standardising protection in all areas.

In particular, IHRC commends Mr Robles for clearly shaming the UK as a nation which is rapidly digressing from the most basic of human rights obligations.

Chairman of IHRC, Massoud Shadjareh stated:

“This report must act as a wake-up call for the British government which continues to oppress the minorities in Britain through a general policy of fear – fear of terrorism, fear of asylum seekers, fear of Muslims, and general fear of the Other”
