Message From Our Chair
Bismillahi Rahmanir Rahim
We are extremely fortunate that once again Allah has granted us the ability to benefit from this special month of Ramadan. It is important to ensure we are prepared to take full advantage of the opportunities that this month presents.
While Ramadan is undoubtedly a month of ibadah and getting closer to Allah SWT and focusing on our spirituality, it is also a time for reflecting on the true purpose of our existence and our responsibilities. Undoubtedly, we have had a very difficult year which has been testing for all of us. The pandemic and its challenges have touched the lives of all of us but they have also created opportunities to be more caring towards those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
The global pressures on Muslims of China, Myanmar, Kashmir, Palestine, Nigeria and Yemen should give us a better appreciation of the importance of a united Ummah and its responsibilities. Unfortunately, these haven’t been the only areas of injustice in the Ummah – we have also seen the environment of hate intensifying against Muslims in the West. We have seen the manifestation of this in places like France, Austria, Switzerland, UK and the West as a whole where Muslims are easy targets of hatred and discrimination.
In this month we also stand up for the rights of others and all those who are oppressed. We will mark Al-Quds Day to remember the plight of the Palestinians and all those who are oppressed. Please participate in the Fly the Flag campaign, which will take place in the last week of Ramadan. You can follow our activities on our website at www.ihrc.org
I would like to invite you all to become a part of the solution to our multiple problems. We have to stand up confidently against Islamophobic trends and support the victims. To that end IHRC’s campaign and advocacy both nationally and internationally, including at the UN, is an opportunity to give a voice to the voiceless. IHRC Trust has set up opportunities to provide much needed aid for places like Yemen, Nigeria and the Rohingya in Bangladesh/Malaysia. Again, this Ramadan we will be supporting Muslim prisoners in the UK, a much neglected category, focussing our efforts on trying to raise the spiritual levels of juveniles. Or you could provide general support which will go towards all these projects. Donate at IHRC
I would also like to request your help and support for our IHRC Legal Fund to support those who have found themselves in Britain and need to regularise and prove their right to remain. The fund will be supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our community, which is only possible with your generous help.
While it would be easy to feel a sense of hopelessness in the face of the hostility we endure, I would like to remind you of the heroic courage of our Prophet SAW and his companions in this holy month in the Battle of Badr. When confronted with an overwhelming force, their iman, confidence and belief in Allah SWT allowed them to prevail. What we need now is that brotherhood, that certainty and belief in Allah SWT and our deen to pull us through these difficult times. Let us come together, let us be part of the solution for ourselves, our Akhirah and our fellow human beings.
