Prisoner of Faith Update: Dr Hassan al-Turabi Released

1 July 2005

IHRC welcomes the news that Prisoner of Faith Dr Hassan al-Turabi has been freed from prison by the Sudanese government. Dr al-Turabi was released on 30 June 2005 having being imprisoned without charge since March 2004. Dr al-Turabi’s opposition party, the Popular National Congress has also had the ban on it lifted and will re-open its Khartoum headquarters.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has also announced that he will lift the state of emergency across most of the country and release all political prisoners.

IHRC congratulates all campaigners for their tireless efforts in securing the release of Dr al-Turabi and calls upon them to maintain the pressure on the Sudanese government to keep good its promise to release all political prisoners.

As Dr al-Turabi told his supporters upon his release, his joy would be complete only if all \”the people for whom we sacrifice and get arrested were also free.\”

Please write to the following people to request the release of the remaining political prisoners.
