Background

India has been gripped by anti-Muslim violence following the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Act. IHRC is asking campaigners to join this campaign, demanding equal citizenship for all Indians regardless of religion or other factors.

In July 2019, the Indian Home Minister, Amit Shah, told the parliament that the “government will identify illegal immigrants living on every inch of country’s soil and deport them,” signalling the expansion of the NRC to the rest of India. During the 2019 general elections, the BJP claimed that “illegal immigrants”, or “termites” from Muslim majority Bangladesh have sneaked in and are living off the resources of Indian citizens.

In November 2020, a group of international experts on genocidal violence sent a stark warning on the impending danger of “genocide” of India’s 200 Million Muslim minority, at a panel discussion at Washington DC. The Indian American Muslim Council organised the panel. Dr Gregory Stanton who is the founder-president of Genocide Watch, which aims at monitoring, preventing and stopping genocide and other forms of mass murder in the world stated that

the “systematic crimes against humanity is already underway” in India. He mentioned the demolition of Babri mosque and building of a temple as “important in the development of cultural underpinnings for genocide.” Reacting to the fact that Delhi Police arrested hundreds of Muslims in Delhi riot cases and accused them of violence against themselves, Dr Stanton termed it “denial,” the last stage in genocide. “Denial is the tenth stage of every genocide.  It starts actually at the beginning and goes all the way through to the end and afterwards…That’s what is going on when they are charging Muslims with, would you believe it, killing themselves? I don’t believe it! And I don’t think anybody should believe it,” Dr Stanton said.

Dear [insert name],

I am sure you are aware of the dire situation of Muslims in India. Modi’s government is currently presiding over a series of laws and policies that systematically targets Muslims, minorities and political dissidents across the country.

From mob lynching to state-sanctioned violence, Muslims in India are under constant attack and require your immediate solidarity and support.

I am writing to you to ask your government to make strong representations to the Indian government and demand they end persecution against Muslims and other minorities and to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act and related policies immediately.
