Action Alert: Israel using British Airspace in Gibraltar to Prepare for Nuclear Strike on Iran

1. Background

The Sunday Times has reported that in its preparation for an air attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Israeli pilots have been flying long-haul as far as Gibraltar to simulate the 2,000-mile round trips to Natanz, Isfahan and Arak, where nuclear facilities are located.

The report quotes Israeli army officials and claims that the Israeli Air Force intends to drop a low-yield one kiloton nuclear weapon on the facility at Natanz which nuclear physicians claim could lead to some radioactive fallout. Israel also intends to hit Arak and Isfahan with regular aerial bombs, the latter city being near a metropolis of 4.5 million people.

Further reports have suggested that Israeli planes and units may have landed in Gibraltar.

2. Action Required

As Gibraltar is a UK overseas territory, British government permission is required before Israeli planes can fly in the airspace of Gibraltar. Should Israel launch a nuclear attack on Iran in the future, the British government will have been complicit in such an attack, in violation of international law.

Write to the Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett and express your concerns to him as to how the British government can be complicit in the preparation for such an attack which will not only be immoral and illegal but which will have devastating consequences for the entire region.

Dear Ms Beckett,

Re: Israeli Use of Gibraltar Airspace in Preparation of Nuclear Strike on Iran

I am writing out of deep concern about the possible Israeli use of British airspace over Gibraltar in preparation for strikes, including a nuclear one, on atomic facilities in Iran.

Such a strike would be contrary to international law and have devastating consequences for the entire region. Nuclear physicians have claimed that these strikes could lead to some radioactive fallout. With one of the intended targets at Isfahan being near a metropolis of 4.5 million people, the destruction would be tremendous.

I am moreover very concerned as to Britain’s role and complicity in such an attack. By giving permission to Israeli planes to use the airspace over Gibraltar in preparation for such strikes, Britain has become an active partner in these crimes. Further reports have suggested that Israeli planes and units may have landed in Gibraltar. I hope you will be able to dispel such reports.

I call upon you to ensure that no more flights are made through British airspace and confirm that the British government is in no way assisting in any plan to bomb Iran or elsewhere. Please do so immediately so that Britain is not remembered for its role in a 21st century Hiroshima.

I look forward to hearing from you soon on this urgent matter.

Yours Sincerely,
