Vacancies at IHRC: British Muslims’ Expectations of the Government (BMEG) Project

Position 1:
Researcher for Volume 7 of the British Muslims’ Expectations of the Government project
Three months, starting September 2005

IHRC is looking for researcher for volume 7 of the British Muslims’ Expectations of the Government (BMEG) project, to be published in November 2005. This project was launched in the summer of 2004 and its first two reports were launched at the House of Lords in December.

Applicants should be computer literate, and have a background in social science and have completed postgraduate studies in the field. A knowledge of SPSS software is highly desirable. Applicants should be conversant with the aims and work of the BMEG project and IHRC. A knowledge of (a) community language(s) is desirable but not essential. Applicants should provide at least two professional references and a CV, with a covering letter briefly outlining why they want to work for IHRC and this project in particular.

Applications must be received by 5 pm Friday, 12th August, and applicants must be available for interview on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday the following week.

IHRC hours are 10 am – 6 pm, and our offices are based in Wembley, London. This position does not require continuous attendance at the office, and places of work are negotiable.

Job description

Researching and writing up background studies on the area under discussion
Helping to analyse and write up qualitative responses and quantitative data
Helping to formulate recommendations for best practice
Some administrative work related to the project

Position 2:
Part-time Vacancy at the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC)
General Administrative worker / Researcher, 2 – 3 days a week
Four months starting October 2005
£12,000 pro rata

IHRC is looking for a part-time worker to provide administrative and some research support for its project British Muslims’ Expectations of the Government. This project was launched in the summer of 2004 and its first two reports were launched at the House of Lords in December.

Applicants should be computer literate, and a background in social science is highly desirable. Applicants should be conversant with the aims and work of the BMEG project and IHRC. A knowledge of (a) community language(s) is desirable but not essential. Applicants should provide at least two personal references and one academic or appropriate professional reference and a CV, with a covering letter briefly outlining why they want to work for IHRC and this project in particular.

IHRC hours are 10 am – 6 pm, and our offices are based in Wembley, London. Some work during unsociable hours may be required.

Job description

Providing administrative support to the BMEG managers and researchers
Undertaking basic collation and other research related tasks
Helping to co-ordinate parts of the project and ensuring smooth communication between team members
Undertaking some general administrative work for IHRC
