Dear Dr. Koompirochana:

Re: Ethical Refusal to visit Thailand

I am writing to you to inform you that neither I nor my family will be visiting Thailand for holidays or vacation in future.

I have come to this decision after learning of the intense persecution of the Muslims in the southern provinces by the Thai government. Most recently, I saw the carnage on the news in late October 2004 where 84 unarmed Muslim protestors were ruthlessly killed while in police custody. This followed the slaughter of 120 Muslims by Thai security forces in April 2004

I have discovered that this is only the latest episode in the severe persecution and social, political and economic discrimination which the Muslims in the south of Thailand have been facing for over one hundred years. There has been an ongoing gross and systematic violation of their human rights in contravention of international human rights standards.

I do not believe that people of conscience should visit Thailand unless and until it ends its persecution of the Muslims in the South. Consequently, I will be encouraging my family, friends and colleagues to boycott your country until it begins to act in a civilized manner.

Yours sincerely,
