A seminar organised by the Islamic Human Rights Commission

Sunday 8th September 2002, from 4 p.m. – 6.30 p.m. at the Islamic Centre of England, 140 Maida Vale, London, W9 ( a map is available at:,+W9&searchp=newsearch.srf&mapp=newmap.srf ).

The seminar will look at:

The impact of anti-terrorist legislation on the Muslim community after 9/11;
The role of the media in demonising Muslims;
Anti-Muslim hate crimes in the UK in the wake of 9/11.

There will be a short session for questions and discussion and light refreshments will be served.

IHRC will be launching two reports regarding anti-terrorist legislation and anti-Muslim hate crimes on this day. Speakers at the seminar will include IHRC researcher Sultana Tafadar and solicitor and IHRC advisor Mudassir Arani who recently represented Sulayman Zain-ul Abedin the Muslim cleared of terrorist offences. A paper by one of the lawyers for some of the new terrorist legislation internees, Natalia Garcia is also sending a paper to be presented at the seminar. Also speaking will be the journalist Yvonne Ridley.
