CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Reporting of anti-Muslim backlash incidents since September 11.

1. New report being prepared into anti-Muslim attacks, request for reporting.

2. EU acknowledges IHRC’s work in reporting anti-Muslim attacks in new report.

IHRC is currently preparing an updated report, further to our report entitled ‘UK Today: The anti-Muslim backlash in the wake of September 11, 2002.’ We urge anyone who suffered an anti-Muslim incident to report it to us.

No incident is insignificant. It can be verbal abuse or even a nasty comment to outright physical attacks on yourself, a person you know or property. All information will be kept secure and in strictest confidence. Reports can be given anonymously. A form already exists for self-reporting, please contact us on (+44) 20 8902 0888 or email reporting@ihrc.org, for a copy. You may prefer to write your own statement and fax, email or post it to us (at the numbers and addresses below) or give it to us over the telephone (on the number above).

We cannot stress enough the importance of reporting such incidents however small they may seem. The statistics that we compile and the general types of crimes that we have identified can be used to ask police, local authorities and governments to provide the protection and resources that the community needs for its protection.

The European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia has released several country reports entitled ‘Anti-Islamic attacks in the EU after the terrorist attacks in the US.’ The UK report uses IHRC’s first report as and acknowledges our work in this field. More information on the report can be found at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_2005000/2005943.stm

“And what reason have you that you should not fight in the way of Allah and of the weak among the men and the women and the children, (of) those who say: Our Lord! Cause us to go forth from this town, whose people are oppressors, and give us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper.”
