Background

On 6th February, Sheikh Ibraheem el-Zakzaky and his wife Mualima Zeenah, have a court hearing in the Kaduna High court of Nigeria, on trumped up charges.

It has been four years now that the Sheikh and his wife have remained in illegal detention. The federal high court of Nigeria which is the highest court in Nigeria has ordered his release stating that his arrest is unconstitutional and compensation must be paid. Not only is their continued detention illegal and immoral, both are in very poor health and are being denied access to medical care.

With their health condition remaining critical, the Nigerian authorities’ refusal to allow the Sheikh and Muallima medical treatment can be seen as a a slow assassination attempt.

The FreeZakzaky campaign demands the immediate release of Sheikh and Mallima and all those detained after the Zaria Massacre of 2015.

Subject:  Urgent – Release Sheikh Zakzaky and Muallima Zeenah immediately

Dear [Insert Ambassador/High Commisioner’s name],

I am writing to inform you about the continued illegal detention of Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and Mallima Zeenah. It has been four years now that the Sheikh and his wife have been kept in illegal detention. They continue to be refused the medical treatment which they are in dire need of.

This news is deeply concerning, especially at a time where the health of the Sheikh is in critical condition, as is that of Mallima Zeenah.  Refusing their medication could lead to fatal consequences and can be seen as an assassination attempt by the Nigerian authorities.

Their continued detention cannot be justified by any means and should this lead to their deaths, the Nigerian authorities will be held responsible for this complete travesty.

I demand the Nigerian authorities end this episode with the immediate and unconditional release of both the Sheikh and Muallima. I await your urgent confirmation that they will be released immediately.

Yours sincerely,

[Your name]
