1. Summary

The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) is deeply distressed about the ongoing crisis in Bahrain, and concerned about the insufficient coverage of the situation by the mainstream media and the lack of importance given to it by politicians.

Please attend and invite your local MPs to the briefing on the grave human rights situation in Bahrain. Alternatively encourage your MP to contact IHRC and a meeting can be arranged to discuss what parliamentarians should be doing.

2. Background

In this briefing, IHRC aims to highlight some of the many instances of government oppression and suppression of human rights that have occurred during this period, all of which have roots in an historic and institutionalised system of inequality and injustice.

The briefing includes information on:

• Extra-Judicial Killings
• Mass Arrests and Disappearances
• Torture
• Interference by Saudi-led Forces
• Purging of the Political Opposition
• Suppression of Intellectuals and Students
• Attempts to Marginalise the Movement as Sectarian
• Targeting of Human Rights Activists
• Seizure of Salmaniya Hospital, and Persecution of Medical Professionals
• Attacks on Civil-Society
• Sacking of Professional Sportspeople

IHRC calls campaigners to urge their local MPs to attend this briefing. This briefing is organised by the Islamic Human Rights Commission and Lord Avebury taking place on Thursday 12th May at the House of Lords, Committee Room 4, from 17.30 – 19.30.

3. Action required

Write to your local MPs asking them to attend the briefing on the human rights situation in Bahrain at 17:30 on Thursday 12th May at the House of Lords. If they cannot attend this briefing then ask them as to what they are going to do to find out about Bahrain. Encourage them to contact IHRC to find out more and then ask them to meet up with you as one of their constituents to find out what they are going to do to change government policy.

Dear Mr [Name of MP],

Re: Invitation to a briefing on the human rights situation in Bahrain

I am writing to urge you to attend the briefing on the human rights situation in Bahrain at the House of Lords on Thursday 12th May, from 17:30 to 19:30. The briefing is organised by the Islamic Human Rights Commission and Lord Avebury.

The briefing aims to highlight some of the many instances of government oppression and suppression of human rights that have occurred during this period, all of which have roots in an historic and institutionalised system of inequality and injustice.

Information will be given on Extra-Judicial Killings, Mass Arrests and Disappearances, Torture, Interference by Saudi-led Forces, Purging of the Political Opposition, Suppression of Intellectuals and Students, Attempts to Marginalise the Movement as Sectarian, Targeting of Human Rights Activists, Seizure of Salmaniya Hospital, and Persecution of Medical Professionals, Attacks on Civil-Society and Sacking of Professional Sportspeople.

I am deeply distressed about the ongoing crisis in Bahrain, and concerned at the attitude of the British government which has turned a blind eye to the crisis and is playing with words to placate the concern of many people.

If you are not able to attend then I will be expecting you to meet with IHRC personnel who will brief you at another time. I would then like to arrange a meeting to discuss what you are planning to do in reference to this.

I look forward to your reply regarding this urgent matter.

Yours sincerely,
