Salman Sayyid, a professor in Sociology will join IHRC on Thursday 22 September to discuss one of his most prominent books ‘A Fundamental Fear: Eurocentrism and the Emergence of Islamism.’  Sayyid provides an interesting account of how Islam has taken form as a political identity in recent decades and how it has challenged the notion of European/Western supremacy.  He explains how “the de-centring of the West” is taking place and how the West is only one amongst many other civilisations that deserve equal recognition.

Reviews:

Global Society
“A theoretically sophisticated attempt to read contemporary Muslim political identities as a symptom of Eurocentrism’s decline.” –

Nations and Nationalism
“Sayyid’s book has considerable intellectual and personal drive, showing how the adoption of a poststructuralist perspective can alter our perception of important matters of cultural politics.” —

So join IHRC for an evening of discussion and book signing with Salman Sayyid and ask him questions about his work as one of the leading writers and academics in his field.  The event will also be shown live on IHRC.TV from 18.30 – 20.30 BST (GMT +1) on Wednesday 22 September and the book will be available for a 15% discount on the night.

Admission is free. To book a place please call 02089044222 or email events@ihrc.org, or leave your name and details in store.

“And what reason have you that you should not fight in the way of Allah and of the weak among the men and the women and the children, (of) those who say: Our Lord! Cause us to go forth from this town, whose people are oppressors, and give us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper.”
