GMD is a day given to remember man’s inhumanity to man in the perpetration of genocides and genocidal acts. Its foundation is based on the argument by various thinkers that several genocides underpin the modern era. Such genocides include the genocide of slavery, the near eradication of Native Americans, the extermination of populations in the Congo and India, the Nazi Holocaust as well as more recent genocides and genocidal acts including that of the Palestinians, Bosnians, Central American peoples and the Chechens to name but a few.

We will be hosting a number of guest speakers from around the world at a conference including Professor Ilan Pappe of the University of Exeter and Hasan Nuhanovic a survivor from the Bosnian genocide. IHRC are calling for all students, teachers, parents & activists to get involved and raise awareness of the grave atrocities that have taken place across the world over the centuries and the many that continue to exist today. So please ask your local schools, local religious centres and local communities to get involved in creating a movement to stop genocides by taking part in Genocide Memorial Day. Log on to www.genocidememorialday.org for further information or email gmd@ihrc.org if you have any enquiries.

“And what reason have you that you should not fight in the way of Allah and of the weak among the men and the women and the children, (of) those who say: Our Lord! Cause us to go forth from this town, whose people are oppressors, and give us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper.”
