UK Event: Seminar ‘Globalisation, Ideological Democracy and Islamophobia’, 30th July 2003, London, UK

Date: Wednesday 30th July 2003
Time: 6 p.m. (for 6.30 p.m.)
Venue: Main Hall, Islamic Centre of England, 140 Maida Vale, London, W9.

The image of Muslims incarcerated in Camp X-Ray in Cuba has become a symbol of the level of hatred against Islam and demonisation of Muslims. Muslims globally are being put under increasing pressure to conform to political standards imposed by others.

Labelled as backward, unenlightened, violent, even terrorists, Muslims are lectured in particular by the US government to adopt democracy in ‘our countries’ or face the consequences. In this context, IHRC presents the second in its series of events looking at issues of Muslim minority participation in political processes. This event aims to look at the practical implications for Muslims of current political thinking and policy making by the so-called ‘West’.

The seminar will be led by Dr. Saied Reza Ameli, Professor of Sociology at the University of Tehran, and one of the founders of IHRC, who will briefly address the issues at hand to be followed by an open discussion and question and answer session. IHRC’s latest report is by Dr. Ameli entitled ‘Democracy in Question – the Persecution of the Believers’. At 14 pages it provides a good and short background to some of the issues to be discussed and attendees may wish to read it before attending the seminar. It can be downloaded in PDF format from:
