Alert: UK – Arabic speaking campaigners urged to attend M&S picket

1. Summary
2. Background

1. Summary

There has been a weekly picket held outside Marks & Spencer in Oxford Street (Marble Arch end) every Thursday for the past nine years. The picket was founded by various organisations including the Islamic Human Rights Commission; however the core founders were a small group of Muslim women. Currently the picket is run by mainly leftist groups, who have shown an exceptional commitment by consistently picketing every Thursday evening between 6pm to 8pm.

IHRC would like to encourage campaigners to attend the picket, especially Arabic speaking individuals, since they are so underrepresented. Marks & Spencer have a lot of Arabic speaking customers therefore it would be hugely beneficial to have Arabic speaking picketers who can inform these customers about the support which Marks & Spencer show to Israel.

2. Background

Marks & Spencer have an established history of supporting the apartheid state of Israel by purchasing goods from illegal Israeli settlements and supporting Israel with $233 million in trade annually (Jerusalem Report, 5 June 2000).

For more facts on the relationship between Israel and Marks & Spencer please visit: http://www.inminds.co.uk/boycott-marks-and-spencer.html

IHRC have produced ‘Boycott M&S leaflets’ and we encourage all coordinators, volunteers and individuals to distribute these leaflets amongst friends, family and the wider community to raise awareness and to prevent further support to a company that aids a system which insists on causing unimaginable human suffering  contrary to universal human conscience as well as flagrantly violating international law.

To order leaflets please send your name, address and the quantity you require to Haneefa by one of the following means:

Email: haneefa@ihrc.org
Telephone: 0208 904 4222
Post: IHRC, PO Box 598, Wembley, HA9 7XH, UK.

To attend the weekly picket go to: Marks & Spencer, 458 Oxford Street, London, W1C 1AP. It begins at 6pm and finishes at 8pm.

“And what reason have you that you should not fight in the way of Allah and of the weak among the men and the women and the children, (of) those who say: Our Lord! Cause us to go forth from this town, whose people are oppressors, and give us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper.”
