Eid MessageHelp save lives in Lebanon

A ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon on 27 November 2024 has brought an end to recent hostilities – though daily violations of the ceasefire agreement are reported – , but the scale of damage, of people returning or still displaced means that the humanitarian needs will continue to unfold in parallel to critical needs for recovery and reconstruction. Many are now in desperate need of aid. At least 24,000 residential buildings have been badly damaged or completely destroyed.

We need your support to help tens of thousands of people affected by the crisis with food parcels, hygiene kits, blankets and mattresses, and provide thousands of items of medical supplies for hospitals and primary healthcare clinics. If you would like to donate, please click on the link below:

Eid MessageThe Best Eid Ever – Asma Mobin-Uddin (Author), Laura Jacobsen (Illustrator)

Young readers can learn about Eid, a religious holiday celebrated by Muslim families every year, as well as the Hajj pilgrimage, when Muslims travel back to Mecca for the Eid, in this picture book about Muslim culture and traditions written by Dr. Asma Mobin-Uddin and illustrated by Laura Jacobsen.

This Eid, Aneesa should be happy.  But her parents are thousands of miles away for the Hajj pilgrimage. To cheer her up, her Nonni gives her a gift of beautiful clothes, one outfit for each of the three days of Eid. At the prayer hall, Aneesa meets two sisters who are dressed in ill-fitting clothes for the holiday. She soon discovers that the girls are refugees – they had to leave everything behind when they left their native country to live in America.

Aneesa, who can’t stop thinking about what Eid must be like for them, comes up with a plan – a plan to help make it the best Eid holiday ever.

Eid MessageREAD: The Long View: Vol 7, Issue 2: Temporary, Emancipatory or Terminal?: AI, New Technologies and the Future

This publication introduces a series of essays examining artificial intelligence (AI) from ethical, spiritual, political, and social perspectives. It begins by noting that while AI often evokes fears of destructive machines, the real concern lies in how rapidly developing technology might be misused by humans.

The collection explores the ethical, social, and political implications of artificial intelligence. Saied Reza Ameli argues that AI represents a new epistemological paradigm that Muslims should embrace while guiding its development through Quranic moral principles so it benefits humanity both materially and spiritually.

Other essays examine wider concerns: Sandew Hira highlights how AI often reproduces Eurocentric knowledge due to biased training data but suggests it can still serve decolonial aims if critically guided by users, while João Silva Jordão warns that powerful elites could exploit AI for manipulation, including simulating voices or images of the dead.

The issue concludes with Saqib Deshmukh’s essay on Britain’s “grooming gangs” narrative, arguing that it has been politicised by far-right groups to fuel Islamophobia and deflect attention from systemic failures in protecting victims.
