On 30 May 2025, IHRC were joined by acclaimed broadcaster and journalist, Myriam Francois to do an exclusive reading and workshop of the book, I’m A Cedar Tree, written by Fatema Zahra.

I’m A Cedar Tree traces the story of the majestic Cedrus libani of Lebanon. From its roots in the era of ancient Prophets to its enduring presence as a symbol of resilience and resistance, this enchanting tale weaves history, culture, and nature into a celebration of the monumental cedar tree. Packed with fascinating facts and a powerful narrative, our young readers learned about the strength of nature and the enduring spirit of its land and people.

All profits from the sale of this book (and from the event sales) will go to the IHRC Trust’s Lebanon Appeal.

Our young audience were first tasked with writing a message of love, support, and solidarity for the children of Palestine. This was then followed by Myriam doing a reading of I’m A Cedar Tree, where the children learned about its cultural and historical significance, as well as its mention in the Prophet’s (SAW) Night Journey and the trees’ healing properties.

As part of a meaningful activity, the children then wrote their own personal pledge—a short, heartfelt promise to stand with and support those who are oppressed. This pledge included commitments to speak out against injustice, treat everyone with kindness, and learn about the struggles others face. The aim of the pledge is to be kept in a visible place, serving as a daily reminder of their promise to be compassionate, fair, and brave in the face of inequality. It was a powerful way to help children understand empathy and responsibility from a young age.

The kids then engaged in a colouring activity, getting creative and imaginative with colouring in drawings of cedar leaves, whilst Myriam sang and recited dhikr with them.

Copies of I’m A Cedar Tree signed by Myriam Francois are available to purchase from the IHRC Bookshop.

The Resilience Collection is also available to purchase: this beautifully curated bundle of three children’s books—Free Free Palestine, I’m A Cedar Tree, and I’m An Olive Tree—offers young readers a powerful introduction to justice, heritage, and resilience. Through Zara’s eye-opening visit to the Houses of Parliament, children learn about the importance of protest and standing up for what’s right in Free Free Palestine. I’m A Cedar Tree takes readers on a historical journey through Lebanon’s iconic cedar, symbolizing strength and survival across centuries. Meanwhile, I’m An Olive Tree tells the tender yet enduring story of Palestine’s ancient olive trees, reflecting the spirit of a people rooted deeply in their land and history. Together, these books inspire empathy, cultural awareness, and a lifelong commitment to justice and peace.
