Arzu Merali, activist and co-founder of the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) based in the UK came to Granada to participate in the International Conference ISLAMOPHOBIA: ROOTS, DISCOURSES AND COUNTER-NARRATIVES FROM A DECOLONIAL PERSPECTIVE that took place at the Euro-Arab Foundation for Higher Studies (FUNDEA) in February 2017. She tells us how after 20 years working in the Commission they have sadly seen now a huge rise in the environment of hate and a climate of fear in Westernized societies. The IHRC campaigns for justice for all peoples regardless of their racial, confessional or political background, and they have consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The series of conferences and activities called “Con-textos árabo-musulmanes. Discursos y contra-narrativas a la islamofobia”, was organized by FUNDEA together with Casa Árabe and Ayuntamiento de Granada (council) as part of SISUMMA´s training programme on European citizenship, minorities and multicultural coexistance.
