INTRODUCTION:

Court ordered transfer of the Sheikh and his wife to the Kaduna Prison and adjourned sitting to 6 Feb, 2020. Genuine concerns are raised that the couple, with life threatening health conditions, will not survive the harsh physical regime of a state prison. IHRC chair Massoud Shadjareh said: “Putting a man in such poor health in prison is effectively signing his death sentence.

We request campaigners to contact the Embassy / High Commission of Nigeria in your country.  A model email / letter is provided below.

Subject:  Urgent – Potential transfer of Sheikh El-Zakaky and Mallimah Zeenah to prison. Demand for their immediate release

Dear [insert the name of  Ambassador / High Commissioner],

Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife Mallimah Zeenah continue to be detained on false pretences.  I remain deeply concerned about their safety and security.  The latest news that they will be transferred to Kaduna Central Prison, if true, is appalling.

Their detention has already been found to be illegal.  It is clearly immoral.  The actions being taken in this matter are bringing Nigeria into further disrepute internationally.

I demand the Nigerian authorities end this episode with the immediate and unconditional release of both the Sheikh and Mallima.  I am also deeply concerned that hundreds of people have been similarly detained since the Zaria massacre in 2015, and many others have been arrested and detained for taking part in protests.  These arrests and detentions appear to be persecution and I further demand all those detained are also release.

I await your urgent confirmation that they will be released immediately.

Yours sincerely,

[Your name]

05 December 2019

IHRC condemns the decision of the Kaduna state high court ordering the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife to be transferred from the custody of the internal security services (DSS) to a prison in the state.

The order marks a disturbing turn in the persecution of the couple who have both been in custody since they were badly injured and detained following a savage military attack on the Islamic Movement of Nigeria in December 2015.
