This was our window in the IHRC Bookshop & Gallery today*. Because no-one is illegal.
Afterwards we also added, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit and Environment of Hate: the New Normal for Muslims in the UK.  You can read more on how anti-migrant hatred is coded with anti-Muslims hatred and vice versa on the Counter-Narratives to Islamophobia project page, which covers 8 European countries, including the UK.
The other titles were chosen for the Bookshop & Gallery window because the hysteria the UK is gripped by – flag flying, anti-migrant hatred – needs to be properly understood, both in terms of how the white-working class is being manipulated by cynical political narratives, and also how racialisation and xenophobia operate in the wider crisis of British society.
This Land, and more so Minority Rule, are prescient looks at the culture war narratives and the crisis of politics we see unfolding now. Both are 40% off.
Blackout is for older children and explains the experience of refugee children today. It was on offer for different reason.
In Bordering Britain, Nadine El-Enany argues that regardless of what discourses dictate, people with personal, ancestral or geographical links to colonialism, or those existing under the weight of its legacy of race and racism, have every right to come to Britain.
The Island, is an astonishing and powerful picture book about refugees, xenophobia, multiculturalism, social politics and human rights. When the people of the Island discover a man and a tattered raft on their beach, they are reluctant to take him in. He doesn’t look like them. But they cannot send him back to the sea where he will surely perish. Instead, they put him aside but even that doesn’t solve their problem. This powerful book conveys exactly what the narratives of fear, division and hatred result in. It is a must read.
This is where we are at in the UK today. There are more books on these issues in the online shop, there is much research on the IHRC website on what is causing this and where it is heading. Let’s learn the lessons of the past and change the script.
