For Immediate Release
Walk and Vigil
On Friday October the 14th Rachel will be out in London all day raising awareness about Omar Deghayes. At 4pm Downing Street will take a petition, and at 5pm there will be a vigil at the American Embassy.
Omar Deghayes is a refugee from Libya where his father died in detention. He has lived in this country for 20 years and has a young son. He was taken to Guantanamo Bay in January 2003 with no clear evidence against him. There have been frightening reports of his treatment and he has been on hunger strike since September. Because he never registered as a British citizen he is not being helped by our Foreign Office.
In order to raise awareness about Omar Deghayes, Rachel will be dressed in the uniform and full shackles that he has to wear. She will be walking for 12 hours in sympathy with those who are interrogated for 12 hour stretches. Lealfets, prayer requests and candles will be left at as many places as possible.
Mosques, churches and temples are being approached to ask if she can stop for a brief prayer. Many are already extending their welcome and support. This is an opportunity to show how people from all religions have solidarity in their dismay over the treatment of Omar Deghayes.
At 4pm Rachel will take a petition to Downing Street and then continue to the American Embassy. People can show their support for Omar Deghayes by joining in a vigil from 5pm. Please bring banners and candles. If you cannot come, you can still light a candle for Omar.
Rachel is not a member of any organisation, although human rights groups are supporting this day.
