Press Release: UK Event – Genocide Memorial enters its tenth year on 20 January

Date:     20 January 2019

Venue: P21 Gallery, 21-27 Chalton Street, London NW1 1JD, UK

Time: 12-4pm, lunch at P21 Gallery followed by speeches, poetry and commemoration

The tenth annual Genocide Memorial Day[1] takes place on Sunday 20 January in London, UK.  The event was set up by Islamic Human Rights Commission in 2010 to mark the first anniversary of the end of Operation Cast Lead and to throw light on the systems and structures that lead to genocide and genocidal acts both in the past and at the current time.

Since its inception other Genocide Memorial Day events have taken place all over the world including Jerusalem, Kuala Lumpur, Paris and Brussels, through the Universal Justice Network, the Decolonial International Network and other platforms.  This year events are scheduled to take place in The Hague, Brussels and Kuala Lumpur.

This year’s UK event takes the theme ‘Genocide as a tool of colonialism’ and will be addressed by Sandew Hira of the International Institute of Scientific Research and the Decolonial International Network and Professor Haim Bresheeth of School of Oriental and African Studies. Poetry will be performed by Narjis Khan.

A commemoration of past and ongoing genocides and a minute’s silence will close the event.
