PRESS RELEASE: Britain discriminates against Muslims
Report findings to be launched 16th February 2000

The IHRC will be launching its report into the level and nature of discrimination against Muslims in British society, next week, at the House of Lords. The meeting will be chaired by Lord Ahmed of Rotherham and Mike O’Brien MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office will be giving a brief presentation on the government’s position.

The report offers the first statistical evidence as to the level of discrimination that Muslims in the UK face. It is also the first to show a trend in the level and nature of discrimination faced by different sections of the community. The IHRC’s results follow extensive investigation of the problem of discrimination over the last two years. The report includes examples of discrimination in education, employment, and everyday life ranging from the offensive to the violent. One of the most disturbing findings relates to the increased problems faced by the younger generation. Indeed over all, the extent of discrimination is shockingly high.

The meeting will be attended by a number of lawyers, professionals, community members, academics and parliamentarians. Grass-roots organisations that have worked with the community will also be attending.

The programmme starts at 6 p.m. in the Moses Room, House of Lords, London, SW1A 0PW, on Wednesday 16th February.

IHRC is an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
