After the military coup that took place in Egypt to remove the democratically elected leader of the country, the military has moved quickly to close down religious TV stations. This is of course a move to hinder democracy, shut down dissenting voices and reduce the possibility of mobilisation of religious groups against the military coup.
IHRC believes in the freedom of religion and specifically targeting Islamic channels in Egypt is an infringement of this right. Since the coup the military has takes several anti-democratic measures including arresting senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood it is a stark reminder of the Mubarak era where the Muslim Brotherhood were sent underground.
IHRC calls upon the International community to stand against the witch hunt against Islamic groups in Egypt. Claims that other stations, mainly Palestinian TV stations, have been targeted are also emerging.
IHRC Chairman, Massoud Shadjareh said “The voice of the Islamic TV channels should not be silenced; they have as much right to be heard as any other group. This is obviously a move by the military to target the Muslim Brotherhood.”
