Islamic Unity Week is an annual event observed between the 12th and 17th of Rabi ul-Awwal, aiming to bring Muslims together by recognising both Sunni and Shia dates for the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It promotes unity, dialogue, and cooperation among different Muslim communities.

The Mawlid is the celebration of the birth of the Prophet, observed by many Muslims around the world. For many communities, it is a time of joy and reflection, marked by reciting poetry, telling stories of the Prophet’s life, offering prayers, and sharing food. The celebration is seen as a way to honour the Prophet’s character, teachings, and role in guiding Muslims.

In preparation for the Mawlid, why not purchase the following books that are available at IHRC Bookshop? The first three books listed are 50% off or more:

Imam Achmad Cassiem’s The Quest for Unity and Other Selected Works, republished by IHRC Press, brings together key writings from his anti-apartheid activism. A former Robben Island prisoner with Nelson Mandela and leader of the Qibla movement, Cassiem links Islamic teachings with the global struggle for justice. In Quest for Unity, he criticises divisions among Muslims, arguing that unity is essential for resisting oppression.

Other works, such as Ramadhan: The Month of High Intensity Training and Islam’s Triumph Over Apartheid, emphasise personal transformation, the role of the Ummah, and Islam’s vision of justice, making the collection relevant to ongoing liberation struggles.
