Sheikh El-Zakzaky and Mallimah Zeenah remain under Nigerian security control in hospital in New Delhi. Negotiations are ongoing to ensure both the Sheikh and Mallimah’s immediate needs and comfort are met, as well full access and freedom of movement given.
The Indian authorities still have police stationed at the hospital restraining the Sheikh and Mallimah’s freedom of movement. Today, 15 August, thus far the Nigerian security services have prevented the Sheikh accessing his lawyers, medical team as well as Massoud Shadjareh from IHRC.
Ask the Indian authorities to immediately ensure the unfettered safety and security, of Sheikh and Mallimah. This includes allowing their freedom of movement. It also includes allowing medical treatment under the supervision of the team of Sheikh and Mallimah’s choosing and at a hospital of their choosing. Please keep all correspondence polite. A model letter / email is provided below, as well as details of some Indian Ambassadors / High Commissioners.
Subject: Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and Mallimha Zeenah
Dear [insert the name of your Ambassador / High Commissioner],
Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife Mallimah Zeenah arrived on Tuesday 13 August in New Delhi for urgent medical treatment.
I am deeply concerned by reports of the disrespectful treatment of Mallimah Zeenha Ibraheem and Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky since their arrival. I am very concerned that India appears to be allowing the security services of another country to use an Indian hospital and Indian policemen to effectively detain a sick and ailing man and his injured wife, and deny him effective medical care and social and legal support.
I request the Indian government immediately ensure the following:
- That Sheikh and Mallimah are allowed freedom of movement in India, including the ability to move to one of the hospitals of their choosing;
- That the Indian police no longer restrain their movements or follow them;
- That Indian authorities prevent Nigerian security services from committing further acts of detention, harassment or cruelty on Indian soil.
I look forward to your response.
