Urgent Alert: Nigeria – Leader of Islamic Movement under immediate threat from security services; at least five people shot and killed, and several injured at pro-Palestine demonstration in Zaria

Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has received reports of armed riot police moving towards Mu’allim Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky’s house in Zaria, Kaduna State, northern Nigeria.  Members of the Islamic Movement are surrounding the home of Nigeria’s Islamic Movement leader, in a bid to block any attack by police.

Members o f the movement are unarmed, whereas the mobile police units are heavily armed and deploying in streets and areas near Al-Zakzaky’s residence.  There are serious and credible fears that an attack is imminent on Al-Zakzaky’s home, which is part of a compound which houses many people.

Earlier today, mobile police opened fire on the annual Al-Quds Day march in support of Palestinians and all oppressed peoples.  At least five people have been killed and several injured.

IHRC is urging campaigners to contact the Nigerian Embassy or High Commission in their country by telephone, email or fax as a matter of urgency, demanding that the police be stood down, and the safety of Al-Zakzaky and his followers guaranteed.

Please also contact the Foreign Minister in your country asking them to put to put pressure on the Nigerian government regarding this issue.

A more detailed alert will be posted later, but please do not wait for this to take action, as the situation is very tense.
