Urgent Alert: Protest Against Detention of Pakistani Politician

IHRC remains deeply concerned that the leader of the Tehreek-i-Islami Pakistan (ITP), Allama Sajjad Naqvi is still being held in detention by Pakistani authorities after being arrested almost a week ago for allegedly being involved in the murder of one of the leaders of the violent SSP party.

The Tehreek-i-Islami was also banned, despite being part of the a component party in the country\’s Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal religious alliance. IHRC has received reports that Naqvi is being denied access to bathing facilities and is even being denied the facility to perform wudu.

The arrest and banning and are widely considered to be politically motivated and undertaken at the behest of the US administration, which urged for the banning of ITP and two other groups three days before all three groups were banned and Naqvi arrested. The following prominent figures have condemned the arrest of Naqvi:

* The president of Muhtada Majlise Amal – Alama Shah Ahmed Nurani (Senator
of Pakistan Senate and Opposition leader)
* The president of Jamatey Islami Pakistan – Kazi Hussain Ahmed (Member of
the National assembly of Pakistan)
* The president of PPP – Mahkdun Amin Fahim (member of the National assembly
of Pakistan and parliament leader of the Pakistan People party)
* The president of Jameeyat Ulmey Islam – Mulana Fasal Ur Rehman (Member of
National Assembly)
* The president of Jameeyat Al Hadis – Professor Sajid1 Mir (Senator of
Pakistan senate)
* The president of Jameeyat Ulma Islam – Sameeul Huq (Member of National
assembly of Pakistan)
* Deputy Parliament Leader – Kazi Hussain Ahmed (Member of National assembly
of Pakistan)

IHRC urges campaigners to write to their ministry of foreign affairs demanding that they intervene in this matter to secure the arrest of Naqvi and all those detained unjustly by General Musharraf’s regime.

UK campaigners can write to the Minister of State Mike O’Brien at the FCO.
