URGENT ALERT: USA – IMAM JAMIL TO FACE NEW CHARGES
06 November 2002

In March 2002 Imam Jamil was convicted by the State of Georgia for shooting two deputies two years earlier, killing one of them. In a trial lasting less than three weeks he was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The evidence used to convict Imam Jamil consisted among other things of weapons claimed to be used for the shootings, found without any finger prints to evidence found at the crime scene which had been trampled over by most of the police officers.

Due to the fact that the case against Imam Jamil had not been proved beyond reasonable doubt, a hearing on the motion for a new trial had been scheduled for 15 November 2002 in Atlanta, Georgia. The appeal was looking extremely promising.

Earlier this October the Federal District Court in Montgomery brought new charges against Imam Jamil, stemming from two years ago. He has been accused of using a rifle to assault three US Deputy Marshalls as they approached him in White Hall, Alabama. This new trial is expected to begin in early December 2002.

It is widely believed that these new charges are being bought in order that the federal government can gain a second conviction against Imam Jamil should he win his appeal against the murder charge.

Imam Jamil has now been moved from Reidsville Prison in Atlanta where he was
being kept under 23 hour lockdown to Elmore County Jail in Alabama.

It has been revealed from an interview with Imam Jamil last week that he has access to the
telephone, but is still under 23 hour lockdown, is not allowed to pray with other inmates, is not
allowed access to the television or radio or any written material including newspapers,
magazines or other publications. Despite all this Imam Jamil remains strong due to his
immense faith in Allah SWT.

IHRC are encouraging campaigners to send letters of support to Imam Jamil at the new
