URGENT ALERT: Write to the DPP to investigate and prosecute members of the BNP for hate crimes.

Yesterday, in a BBC undercover documentary, ‘The Secret Agent’, British National Party activists confessed to committing religiously motivated crimes, including an assault on a Muslim man.

BNP member Steve Barkham told reporter Jason Gwynne how he kicked and punched a man during the 2001 Bradford riots but was not prosecuted as his victim was unable to identify him from police photographs. The documentary also shows BNP leader, Nick Griffin, at a meeting in Keighley saying it was important to stand up and act for the party or \”they (Muslims) will do for someone in your family\”. He calls Islam a \”wicked, vicious faith\” that \”has expanded through a handful of cranky lunatics\” and \”is now sweeping country after country\”. Another member, Stewart Williams, says he wants to \”blow up\” Bradford\’s mosques with a rocket launcher. BNP council candidate Dave Midgley is shown saying he squirted dog faeces through the letterbox of an Asian takeaway.

IHRC calls on all campaigners to write to the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Ken Macdonald, and demand that he investigate and prosecute members of the BNP for the crimes they so arrogantly boast of. A sample letter is below for use by campaigners.

Dear Mr. Macdonald:

I am writing to urge you to ensure that there is a full investigation into those members of the British National Party who confessed to committing religiously and racially motivated crimes on the BBC documentary, ‘The Secret Agent’ (15th July 2004).

In the programme, one BNP member admitted to physically assaulting a man during the 2001 Bradford race riots. Another proudly boasts of having squirted dog faeces through the letterbox of an Asian takeaway. Yet another BNP member speaks of his desire to blow up Bradford’s mosques with a rocket launcher. There are further example sof possible incitement and conspiracies, highlighted by the programme.

These crimes must be investigated and prosecuted immediately. They are completely abhorrent and are symbolic of the Islamophobia which is so rife in British society today.

Sincerely,
