Join artist and writer Hamja Ahsan for an unconventional, hands-on workshop exploring how fried chicken shops and diaspora restaurateurs have become sites of Palestine solidarity, and how these spaces have faced state repression within Germany’s Arab community hubs. Part of the Zine Mela Exhibition, this hands-on workshop invites participants to experiment with ideas, create together and contribute to the vibrant world of independent zine culture.

WHEN: Saturday, 31 October, 2pm – 5pm
WHERE: IHRC Bookshop (202 Preston Road, Wembley, HA9 8PA)

About the event:

What can a chicken shop tell us about diaspora, resistance and Palestine solidarity?

Join artist and writer Hamja Ahsan for an unconventional, hands-on workshop exploring how fried chicken shops and diaspora restaurateurs have become sites of Palestine solidarity, and how these spaces have faced state repression within Germany’s Arab community hubs.

Drawing on Hamja Ahsan’s collection of fried chicken and food zines from Indonesia to England, the workshop will explore food, politics, identity and the power of independent publishing. Participants will also take part in a walking observational visit to a local chicken shop, gathering inspiration from the everyday spaces around them.

The discussions will also be connected to the themes of IHRC’s annual Islamophobia Conference.

The session will culminate in the creation of a collaborative zine and short-form creative micro-fiction.

Whether you’re interested in writing, zine culture, food, diaspora or political expression, come ready to observe, imagine and create.
