Alert Update: Yemeni Prisoner Ali Nader Dies at the Hands of Local Police

1. Background

Ali Amen Nader and Mohamed Ahmed Al-Yaremi were two men who disappeared in Yemen a few months ago.

Ali Amen Nader fled from Yemen fearing religious oppression in March 2002 and applied for political asylum in the Netherlands but was refused asylum.

He later decided to return to Yemen in June 2006 but was arrested at the San’a International Airport for allegedly being a follower of Husain Badr Al Din al Houthi, leader of the Zaidi Shia group ‘The Believing Youth.’ However, his family has confirmed that he had no connection with this group. He was kept at secret locations for a few months.

Recently it was discovered that Ali Amen Nader was killed by the Yemeni authorities as he tried to escape during interrogation. The authorities handed Mr. Nader’s body to his family in November 2006. There were obvious marks of torture on Mr. Nader’s body.

2. Action Required

a. Write to the European Commissioner for Human Rights and appeal to them regarding the fact that Ali Amen Nader is amongst so many others who apply for political asylum in European countries yet are refused despite having a credible case, hence having no choice but to return to their countries. Thereafter, they are seized by the authorities and mysteriously go missing. Many, like Ali Amen Nader, are ruthlessly killed.

Thereafter, they are seized by the authorities and mysteriously go missing. Many like Mr. Nader are ruthlessly killed.

I urge you to consider the cases of political asylum seekers with care and thoroughly research their appeals before declining them.

I urge you to request the Yemeni authorities to investigate Mr. Nader’s murder thoroughly and bring his case to justice and to offer prisoners like him a fair trial with full access to independent legal representation. If they are not charged, they must be released without delay.
