Salam everyone,

We successfully hosted an Author Evening with acclaimed academic and author Salman Sayyid recently that resulted in some great discussion where he was able to expand upon his new book ‘Recalling the Caliphate.’ Fortunately you won’t have to wait long for the footage as a video will be up on our website very soon so keep watch!

There’s some great reading material for you this week with a resource page of articles on Remembrance Day and poppies as well as a comment piece from Hatem Bazian on The Balfour Declaration.

COMMENT

THE BALFOUR DECLARATION: PALESTINE’S BRITISH AND ZIONIST COLONIAL LEGACY

Annually, November 2 is a painful and traumatic date for Palestinians and their allies around the globe. It marks the anniversary of Britain’s shameful issuance of the Balfour Declaration. In releasing the Declaration, Britain provided the 1st “legal” document sanctioning the creation of a newcolonial project centered on Zionist aspirations for Palestine and their dream of a Jewish National Homeland.

The Story Of Ashura: To commemorate the Ashura that just went by Mohammad Bahmanpour brings us this lovingly illustrated book which makes the emotion and history of Ashura easy to understand for children.

Encountering Islam: Knowledge is often thought of as something to be attained and the pursuit of knowledge is usually considered to be a neutral endeavour, involving a higher order of consciousness somehow independent of social influences. While these assumptions may hold true in a limited way, they do not provide a complete picture of knowledge in our lives today. In this wide ranging work, Yusef Progler suggests that the pursuit of knowledge can be a profoundly political process, and knowledge itself can be shaped, sifted and sorted trhough political forces and power relations hidden beneath the veils of objectivity.

The New Jim Crow: In a bold and innovative argument, a rising legal star shows readers how the mass incarceration of a disproportionate number of black men amounts to a devastating system of racial control. This is a terrifying reality that exists in the UK as much as in the US. Despite the triumphant dismantling of the Jim Crow laws, the system that once forced African-Americans into a segregated second-class citizenship still haunts. The US criminal justice system still unfairly targets black men and deprives an entire segment of the population of their basic rights.
