Alert: Prisoners of Faith Campaign Pack: US – Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman

This Ramadan we urge you to campaign for Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the elderly Egyptian sheikh, imprisoned in the US in 1995 under sedition laws last used during the American civil war.

The Sheikh was born in a poor family and became blind in infancy but this did not deter him from achieving his ambitions. He learnt the whole Quran by the age of 11, then went on to complete his PhD at Al-Azhar University, where he also taught afterwards.

His outspokenness against the unjust policies of the Sadat and Mubarak regimes in Egypt and his open preaching of Islam in the US got him into trouble.

He is now 69 years of age and his health has deteriorated significantly. We request all campaigners to support our campaign for the Sheikh and make dua (prayers) for him.

For a detailed account of Sheikh Omar’s trial and detention, please download the campaign pack at: https://www.ihrc.org.uk/show.php?id=2910
