ALERT UPDATE: Intissar Saatcioglu Released by Pakistan

The Islamic Human Rights Commission is pleased to inform campaigners that, by the grace of Allah, former Turkish prisoner of faith Intissar Saatcioglu has been released by the Pakistani authorities. Intissar was detained with her husband, Levant Karagulle, over a week ago by Pakistani security services. Intissar was released this morning and returned to Turkey. Levant remains in detention but is due to be released and returned to Turkey within the week. The couple were in Pakistan carrying out relief work.

IHRC would like to congratulate all campaigners for their immediate response to the action alert to contact the Pakistani and Turkish authorities. It must be made clear that detention of innocent aid workers will not be tolerated under any circumstances in any country.

[Intissar Saatcioglu is the daughter of Turkish human rights campaigner Huda Kaya. Intissar was released by Turkish authorities in October 2004 after having been imprisoned for one year for reciting a poem against the Turkish hijab ban in 1999. For more information about her case, please see Report of IHRC Observer into the legal proceedings against Huda Kaya and the Malatya 75 (July 1999) at https://www.ihrc.org.uk/file/IHRCObserverMalatya75.pdf ]
