Summary

Tell the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office that it must stop its attacks on Yemen in response to them defending the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Background

Whilst the world has continued to allow what UN experts and NGO’s have repeatedly recognised as a genocide, whose victims are estimated to be in tens, if not hundreds of thousands, one country has actively implemented an embargo to try and prevent it, as obligated under the Genocide Convention, and that is Yemen.

In return for this it has been subject to a brutal campaign of bombing from a United States led coalition, which has shown little compunction to target civilian areas. However, even this has not changed Yemen’s policy in standing up for humanity.

The UK had originally joined this campaign, but after the 2024 General Election the new government stopped actual bombing until the evening of 29th April, when British fighter jets begin to once again bomb Yemen.

The RAF has also taken part in surveillance flights over Gaza, feeding the intelligence it has gathered to the Israeli government to facilitate the genocide.

It must be pointed out that Yemen agreed to lift the blockade in response to the recent ceasefire agreement which had been brokered, in part, by the US. It only re-enforced the blockade when Israel broke the ceasefire. Yemen has repeatedly said that once the genocide stops, they will lift the blockade.

Dear Rt Hon David Lammy,

Re: UK militarily aiding the Gaza Genocide by bombing Yemen.

I have been horrified by the support that the UK is providing to what UN officials have repeatedly identified as a genocide in Gaza, by bombing Yemen. As you are no doubt aware this bombing has been done in response to Yemen upholding its obligations under the Genocide Convention in enforcing a blockade of ships aiding the genocide.

Estimates of the amount of people killed in the Gaza Genocide number from the tens to hundreds of thousands, around 70% of whom are believed to be women and children, whilst the International Court of Justice is investigating Israel for the crime of genocide, and the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for both the Israeli Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.

The world has watched for over one and a half years as both the last UK government and your own have helped in these crimes against humanity. It has been revealed that for months the RAF has sent more than 500 surveillance flights over Gaza and has been sharing the information gathered with a government whose leader has been indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court.

Now Britain is involved in the disgraceful bombing of Yemen, simply for blockading the perpetrators of this genocide. I should not have to remind you that Yemen agreed to lift the blockade in response to the recent ceasefire agreement which had been brokered, in part by the US and it only re-enforced it when Israel broke the ceasefire. Yemen has repeatedly said that once the genocide stops, they will lift the blockade. Therefore, you should pressure Israel to return to, and abide by, the ceasefire, rather than bombing Yemen.

The time has come for Britain to end this shameful chapter in our history and to begin to comply with its obligations under international law. This means ending our brutal bombing of Yemen, as well as sanctioning Israel and taking punitive measures against the country to pressure it to respect life, property and international law.

Yours sincerely,
