What Would You Do?
by Emtithal Mahmoud

What would you do if
your town was bombed
And everything near it was gone?
What would you do if
you were cold and alone,
And cast to the streets without a home?
What would you do if
someone killed your mom and dad?
And you had lost everything you had?
What would you do if
you were shattered and broken
Because you have witnessed
the unspoken?
If you run, where would you go?
If you died, would anyone know?
I myself would pray
And hope for a better day.

You can help raise the voice of the oppressed and take action by participating in IHRC’s annual Genocide Memorial Day (GMD) conference that will be taking place on 22 January 2012 at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS in London between 4pm – 8pm.   GMD is a day given to remember man’s inhumanity to man in the perpetration of genocides and genocidal acts. Its foundation is based on the argument by various thinkers that several genocides underpin the modern era.  Such genocides include the genocide of slavery, the near eradication of Native Americans, the extermination of populations in the Congo and India, the Nazi Holocaust as well as more recent genocides and genocidal acts including that of the Palestinians, Bosnians, Central American peoples and the Chechens to name but a few.

The event consists of a variety of short presentations on the world’s many victims with world renowned speakers including Professor Ilan Pappe of the University of Exeter and Hasan Nuhanovic a survivor from the Bosnian genocide.  This year we will be covering a number of atrocities including the heart rending plight of the peoples of Srebrenica and Palestine, the suffering of the transatlantic slave trade and accounts from the victims of the Nazi Holocaust.

IHRC are requesting you to ask your schools, religious centres and local communities to get involved in creating a movement to stop genocides by taking part in Genocide Memorial Day.  Log on to www.genocidememorialday.org for further information or email gmd@ihrc.org if you have any enquiries.

“And what reason have you that you should not fight in the way of Allah and of the weak among the men and the women and the children, (of) those who say: Our Lord! Cause us to go forth from this town, whose people are oppressors, and give us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper.”
