February is a month to remember the Forgotten Genocide in Bosnia. We believe that justice and remembrance are powerful weapons against genocide and for this reason we want to remember the anniversary of the end of the Siege of Sarajevo. The Siege of Sarajevo lasted from 5 April 1992 to 29 February 1996- the longest siege of a capital city in modern history. More than 10.000 people were killed, and thousands are still suffering from physical and psychological traumas.

Lesson Plans and School Resources
We have compiled a selection of resources to highlight the worst atrocity committed in Europe since the Second World War and educate younger generations on the importance of remembering victims of genocide to not repeat the past. We hope that the lesson plans and activities will be of interest and relevance to teachers and students.

Poetry Anthology 2012 – 2019 now available

Poetry Competition for 2021
The Genocide Memorial Day (GMD) poetry competition was established in 2012 to raise awareness around issues like racism, otherisation, discrimination and dehumanisation. Our aim is to inspire students to express themselves through writing poetry and help teachers in subjects across the curriculum encourage students to learn about and discuss genocide and more particularly how genocides come about and how they may be prevented.

The GMD competition challenges students to write a poem and reflect on the theme of ‘protecting humanity from genocide. Full details of the competition can be found here. The deadline for submissions this year is 18^th December 2020. Winners will be announced at the Genocide Memorial Day event on Sunday 17^th January 2021.

The competition generally cuts across various curriculum strands including history, English literature, politics, religious education, citizenship and media studies.
